Abstract: When producing thermoplastic towpreg while using the commingling process, selecting the appropriate sizing is key in ensuring that the material functions at its highest level of performance not only for downstream processes, but also for achieving the desired mechanical properties for the end use. Developing the right sizing helps eliminate broken filaments, reduces health and safety concerns, speeds up processing during the downstream conversion process, and offers superior mechanical properties in application. Concordia Engineered Fibers has developed different sizing systems that are designed for weaving, braiding, tailored fiber placement, 3D printing, and pultrusion. The characterization of each sizing design was initially assessed by evaluating its processability in these processes and secondly by performing mechanical testing to ensure that the desired mechanical properties are achieved. The use of an engineered sizing solution solves processing issues, increases throughput, and achieves the desired mechanical properties.
