Abstract: Current methods for testing the flatwise tensile strength of film adhesives bonded to composite laminate do not yield consistent failure locations. ASTM standards C297 and D7291 are not sufficient in producing desired results, and the development of a new test method, inspired by ASTM C297, will be discussed. In this research, adhesive selection, surface bond preparation, test coupon geometry, and bond line control were studied to determine the preferred procedure for testing the flatwise tensile strength of film adhesives. These results suggest new ways to prepare metallic and composite surfaces for bond preparation, provide insight on the influence of bond line thickness and coupon geometry on test performance and identify additional further work to refine this test method to provide more consistent failure locations.
