Abstract: Cycle time and manufacturing cost reduction are the main drivers in the production of wind turbine blades today. In this direction, the use of intelligent process monitoring to optimize the infusion, curing and bonding by measuring online the real process can reduce energy and increase productivity by 30% while ensuring product quality. In this framework, durable nonintrusive wireless sensors or even without extra sensors have been developed for the sensing of resin arrival, viscosity as well as curing. In-situ measurements of the resin’s electrical resistivity and temperature can provide online the resin’s viscosity during infusion and the on-going Tg during curing. Furthermore, a new concept for improving the usability in everyday production and connection with the moulds’ PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) has been launched successfully. The TURBO project is an on-going R&D project with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) to apply this advanced technology in several aspects of the manufacturing in one of the most advanced wind-blades in the market. Details, results, benefits and perspectives will be presented at the conference.
